By Amanda Williams for MailOnline. Elise Pickering died in her sleep aged two. Senior coroner Michael Singelton was reduced to tears as he admitted he was unable to explain her death. A coroner was reduced to tears at the inquest into the death of a two-year-old girl - as he admitted he was unable to explain why the 'healthy and happy' toddler died in her sleep.
Michael Singleton wept as he extended his 'heartfelt condolences' to the parents of Elise Pickering - who was found dead in bed by her parents at their family home in Whalley, Ribble Valley, Lancashire on July 18, this year. The coroner explained to the grieving parents that his own family had once found themselves in similar tragic circumstances as he recorded a death of natural causes. Elise - described by her family as a 'little angel' - died following a lifetime of good health. Tests carried out by consultant paediatric pathologist Dr Melanie Newbold, found nothing to explain what happened to her.
Mr Singleton Senior Coroner for the District of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley, Lancashire, had to pause for ten seconds to gather his thoughts before delivering his recording. The year old lawyer told Elise's weeping relatives: 'In terms of 'could anything have been Star my Ribble Valley lady As a parent and grandparent, I can't begin to imagine the distress, I cannot go there, my children have been through this.
You have my heartfelt sympathy. He added: 'When we talk about cot death we are talking about three months to 12 months. There is a lot of research being done there but in two years and eight months, you're a little person and that is what makes it so unusual in itself.
I would like to give my heartfelt condolences to everybody because what I set out to do was provide answers to the questions, 'why did our little girl die?
Earlier the Clitheroe hearing was told Elise's mother Lesley Pickering, 43, had gone through a normal pregnancy and, although lengthy, a normal labour too. Elise had no problems growing up and was happy the day before her death. Mr Singleton, Senior Coroner for the District of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley, Lancashire, had to pause for ten seconds to gather his thoughts before delivering his recording.
Mrs Pickering, a therapist, told the inquest: 'I had a 33 hour labour, there were no problems and she was six pounds, 12 ounces. She was our first. Other than the normal childhood coughs and colds, she didn't suffer anything. We had gone into town in the car and went to granny's where she had some lunch and was playing normally.
We went to see her dad and she was quite tired but she always had an afternoon nap so she was ready for that. I gave her a bit of fresh orange juice to help her go and she was a little bit tearful and wanted to cuddle on the settee. We read her bedtime stories, gave her the milk and put her to bed, deciding not to bath her because she was tired. I went in to her at about pm and she was fine at that point.
She was asleep in her normal sleeping position, she had her teddy under her arm and at that point she was OK. She always slept like that. Dr Melanie Newbold, a consultant paediatric pathologist at Manchester Children's Hospital, said: 'Elise was a well grown little girl who looked completely normal, she had no external s of anything. She had no injury or trauma. Internally, looking at Elise, there was not evidence we could pick out of any illness. That is the point we had to say we have not found anything and we have to ask for permission to do further investigation.
Continuing with the examinations, Dr Newbold, looked for bacteria and viruses, she said: 'It's not a perfect test and we didn't detect anything in Elise but that doesn't mean that we exclude anything. There is no s she had any of those. It is more common Star my Ribble Valley lady babies to die suddenly, for example if someone has a heart beat that heats abnormally, they can die suddenly. Also, sometimes people can have out of the blue fits.
Asked about sudden deaths in children Elise's age, Dr Newbold said: 'There is various work being done in young adults and there is a lot of work being done into younger infants, I have to say it's less common in Elise's age. After the inquest, Elise's father Graham Pickering, 45, a self-employed construction worker, said: 'Elise was a happy, healthy little girl who brought a lot of joy to everybody.
